Young Cervical Cancer Survivors Face Higher Risk of Heart Disease

Cervical cancer can often be treated successfully, especially in young women. But a new study from Korea has found that survivors of cervical cancer face a higher risk of developing heart and blood vessel problems later in life.

Researchers studied more than 7,800 women who survived cervical cancer as adolescents or young adults and compared them with over 23,000 women without cancer. After almost nine years of follow-up, the survivors were about 1.5 times more likely to develop heart disease or related problems than those without cancer.

The highest risks were seen in women who received both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These treatments, while effective at controlling cancer, may also damage the heart and blood vessels. Women treated this way had a much higher chance of heart failure and heart disease, and a sharply higher risk of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) and lungs (pulmonary embolism).

The study also found that diabetes and high blood pressure increased the risk of heart problems even more. This means young cervical cancer survivors should have regular check-ups for heart health, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.

Doctors are now urging more awareness about heart health after cancer treatment. Early lifestyle changes—like staying active, eating well, and avoiding smoking—can make a big difference. With proper monitoring and care, many of these heart risks can be managed or prevented.
