Effect of Urine-guided Intraoperative Hydration on Incidence of Acute Kidney Injury after Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic DOI- 10.1097ALN.0000000000005711

Kidney problems are common after major abdominal surgery, especially when heated chemotherapy (HIPEC) is used. But a new approach to hydration during surgery may help lower that risk.

In a new study, patients with a rare cancer called pseudomyxoma peritonei had surgery and HIPEC treatment. Half received hydration based on a detailed urine output goal. The other half received standard fluid care.

The results were clear: patients who got targeted hydration had fewer cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) after surgery. Only 21% developed AKI compared to 39% in the standard group. They also had fewer major complications within 30 days after surgery.

This method used real-time urine measurements to guide how much fluid patients needed during surgery. It helped the kidneys stay healthier and didn’t cause any extra side effects.

If you or someone you love is having CRS and HIPEC for abdominal cancer, ask the surgical team about advanced hydration strategies. Protecting the kidneys could mean a safer and smoother recovery.
