Survival is improving in advanced prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers — but not equally for everyone

A large study looked at cancer data from the U.S. between 2000 and 2019. It focused on people with advanced prostate, kidney, and bladder cancers. The goal was to see how survival has changed over time.

What did the study find?

⦿ People with metastatic prostate cancer lived longer if diagnosed after 2010, with the biggest improvement seen after 2015.

⦿ For advanced kidney cancer, survival steadily improved over the entire period.

⦿ Bladder cancer showed little change until 2015, when survival started to improve.

⦿ Black patients, who used to have worse outcomes, are now starting to catch up. Their survival has improved more in recent years than for white patients.

Why is this important?

It shows that new treatments are working. Advances in medicine are helping more people live longer. But not everyone is benefiting equally, and that needs to change.

What you should know if you or a loved one has advanced cancer

⦿ Newer treatments — like targeted therapies, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy — have improved survival in recent years.

⦿ Getting diagnosed and treated early by a cancer specialist can make a big difference.

⦿ Talk to your doctor about the latest options.

⦿ Don’t be afraid to ask for a second opinion or to explore clinical trials.

Knowing that survival is improving can offer hope. But it also reminds us that equal access to care is still a problem — one that needs more attention.
