How Blood Sugar Control Affects Prostate Cancer Risk in Men With Diabetes

Men with type 2 diabetes are often told to keep their blood sugar levels low to prevent health problems. But a new study found something surprising: tighter blood sugar control might not always mean better outcomes when it comes to prostate cancer.

Researchers looked at data from over 760,000 U.S. veterans with type 2 diabetes. They wanted to know if blood sugar levels (measured by hemoglobin A1c, or HbA1c) affected the risk of dying from prostate cancer.

The results were unexpected. Men with moderate blood sugar levels (HbA1c between 7% and 8%) had a 23% lower risk of dying from prostate cancer compared to those with tight control (HbA1c below 7%). Even those with higher levels (above 8%) had a slightly lower risk.

When the results were broken down by race, both White and Black veterans showed this pattern.

This study doesn’t mean men with diabetes should ignore their blood sugar. Good control is still important for heart, kidney, and nerve health. But it suggests that the link between diabetes, blood sugar, and prostate cancer may be more complex than we thought.

More research is needed to understand why moderate blood sugar control may lower prostate cancer risk—and what this means for future care.
