Multimodal Management of Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Metastases in Colorectal Cancer A Single-Center Retrospective Analysis.DOI 10.1245s10434-025-18106-x

Colorectal cancer can sometimes spread to deep lymph nodes in the back of the abdomen. These are called retroperitoneal lymph nodes.

This type of spread is rare. Because of that, doctors are still learning what treatment works best.

A study looked at 54 patients who had this kind of cancer spread. All patients received chemotherapy first. Then they had either surgery alone or a mix of radiotherapy and surgery. The goal was to remove the cancer in the lymph nodes.

The researchers found that adding radiotherapy before surgery led to a higher chance of killing all visible cancer cells. Still, the overall survival was similar between the two groups. The treatment was safe in both groups. There were no major differences in hospital stays or complications.

This means that using more than one treatmentβ€”chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgeryβ€”might help some patients. It can be done safely and may lead to better control of the cancer. But not all patients will benefit the same way. More research is needed.

If you have colorectal cancer and are told the cancer has spread to deep lymph nodes, ask your doctor about all possible treatment options.

A team approach using multiple methods might offer you the best chance.
