Intensive nursing interventions for post-treatment anxiety and depression in bladder cancer A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Life after bladder cancer treatment can be emotionally difficult. Many patients feel anxiety, sadness, or depression during recovery. These mental health challenges often go unnoticed, even though they can strongly affect daily life and overall wellbeing.
A new study reviewed 16 clinical studies involving nearly 1,800 bladder cancer patients to understand how common these problems are and how they can be improved.
The analysis found that about 1 in 4 patients experienced anxiety after treatment. Depression was even more common, affecting almost 3 in 10 patients. Higher rates were seen in some regions and in patients receiving multiple types of treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.
Researchers also looked at whether intensive nursing support programs could help patients emotionally. These programs usually include regular follow-up, counseling, symptom monitoring, education about recovery, and direct emotional support from trained nurses.
The results were encouraging. Patients who received intensive nursing care had much lower levels of anxiety and depression compared with those who received routine care.
Nurses play a key role in cancer care because they often spend more time with patients, helping them understand treatments, manage side effects, and cope with emotional stress.
This research highlights an important message: emotional health is a major part of cancer recovery. Strong nursing support programs may help bladder cancer survivors feel more confident, less anxious, and better prepared for life after treatment.
