Could Ibuprofen Lower the Risk of Endometrial Cancer in Some Women?

Association of aspirin and ibuprofen use with endometrial cancer risk in the PLCO dataset.DOI 10.1002ijc.70101

Endometrial cancer affects the lining of the uterus. It’s becoming more common, but survival rates haven’t improved much.

Finding ways to lower the risk is important.

This study looked at over 42,000 women between the ages of 55 and 74. They were followed for about 12 years. During that time, 678 women developed endometrial cancer. Researchers wanted to see if taking common painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen made a difference.

They found that women who took at least 30 ibuprofen pills a month had a lower chance of getting endometrial cancer. This was especially true for women who already had heart disease. In that group, ibuprofen seemed even more protective.

Aspirin, on the other hand, didn’t change the risk of endometrial cancer.

This study doesn’t mean everyone should start taking ibuprofen. Taking a lot of any painkiller can have side effects. But it does show a possible new way to reduce riskβ€”especially for women with heart problems.

More research is needed to understand how ibuprofen might help and who should consider it.

Talk to your doctor before starting or changing any medication.
