Fertility-Sparing Surgery Offers Hope for Young Women with Early-Stage Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer can be life-changing for young women, especially those who still want to have children. Traditional treatment usually involves removing both ovaries and the uterus, which ends fertility. A new review shows that fertility-sparing surgery (FSS) can be a safe option for some women with early-stage ovarian cancer.

Researchers reviewed 17 studies that included over 1,000 women under age 50 with stage I ovarian cancer. These women had surgery that removed only the affected ovary and kept the uterus and the healthy ovary intact. The goal was to treat the cancer while preserving the chance to have children.

The results were very encouraging. Between 25% and 91% of women became pregnant after treatment, and more than 80% of those pregnancies led to live births. Most women conceived naturally, while some used fertility treatments. Survival rates were also excellent, with most women remaining cancer-free and alive many years after surgery.

The risk of the cancer returning ranged from 3% to 33%, depending on the type and stage of the tumour. Women with mucinous tumours or more advanced stage IC disease had a higher chance of recurrence, so doctors recommend close follow-up for these patients.

Fertility-sparing surgery gives hope to women who wish to keep their fertility without sacrificing cancer outcomes. It is important that these women receive guidance from both cancer specialists and fertility experts to ensure the safest and most effective care.
