When a Pap test shows unclear results, called ASC-US, doctors often use HPV testing to decide what to do next. If high-risk HPV is found, women are usually sent for a closer exam called colposcopy. But this can lead to too many procedures, especially when cancer risk is low.

A large study looked at over 5,500 women with ASC-US results. It found that not all HPV types carry the same risk. Some types, like HPV16 and HPV33, were much more likely to lead to serious cell changes in the cervix. Others, like HPV73 and HPV26, carried little risk.

Researchers created a new strategy. They divided HPV types into high, medium, and low-risk groups. Only women with the highest-risk types would need to go for colposcopy right away.

This smarter approach still finds most serious cases but avoids unnecessary exams for many women. It means fewer painful or stressful procedures, without missing important warnings.

If you have unclear Pap results, ask your doctor about extended HPV testing. Knowing your HPV type could help guide the right care for you.
