Biparametric vs Multiparametric MRI for Prostate Cancer Diagnosis The PRIME Diagnostic Clinical Trial DOI- 10.1001jama.2025.13722

A new study shows that a simpler type of MRI scan is just as good at detecting serious prostate cancer. This could make testing faster, cheaper, and easier for men worldwide.

Doctors usually use a detailed scan called a multiparametric MRI to check for prostate cancer. It includes several imaging steps, including one that uses a contrast dye. But this takes more time and costs more.

In this large study, nearly 500 men with signs of possible prostate cancer had both the standard MRI and a shorter version called biparametric MRI. The shorter scan skips the contrast dye.

The results were nearly the same. Both scans found serious cancers in almost 30% of men. The shorter scan also did not increase the number of small, less important cancers found.

This means that men could soon get accurate prostate cancer testing without needing a long scan or contrast dye. It also helps hospitals scan more patients in less time.

If you’re being tested for prostate cancer, ask your doctor if a biparametric MRI is an option. It may save time, money, and still give you the answers you need.
