Muscle-invasive bladder cancer is a serious type of bladder cancer. It spreads quickly and often comes back even after treatment. Doctors usually treat it with strong chemotherapy before surgery. This is called neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The surgery removes the bladder and is called radical cystectomy.

But many patients still see their cancer return. That’s why researchers are looking for better treatment plans.

This study looked at 12 large trials with over 5,000 patients. It compared different ways of using chemotherapy and a type of medicine called immunotherapy. Immunotherapy helps the body’s own immune system fight cancer.

The best results came from a mix of all three: chemotherapy before surgery, surgery, and then a medicine called nivolumab afterward. This mix helped people live the longest.

The study gives hope. It shows that using both chemotherapy and immunotherapy at different times may help stop the cancer from coming back.
