Doctors Agree on Key Treatments for Kidney and Urinary Tract Cancers

Kidney and urinary tract cancers now have more treatment options than ever before. But with more choices comes more complexity. To help doctors make the best decisions, experts from around the world gathered at the 2025 Advanced Urologic Cancer Consensus Conference.

Over 50 cancer specialists reviewed the latest research and voted on treatment plans that work best for patients. They reached strong agreement in several important areas:

⦿For kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma): Experts agreed that pembrolizumab should be used after surgery for people with a higher risk of the cancer coming back.

⦿For urinary tract cancer: There was strong agreement that people should get some treatment before bladder removal surgery. Doctors also agreed that for patients with advanced disease, a combination of two drugs—enfortumab vedotin and pembrolizumab—should be used first.

⦿If the cancer grows again and certain tests are negative, doctors should use platinum-based chemotherapy next.

The panel also agreed on using certain drugs after other treatments stop working, especially for kidney cancer.

But the experts could not agree on every question. Some areas still need more research to help doctors make the best treatment choices in the future.

This yearly meeting helps guide cancer care and shows where more studies are needed to give patients the best possible results.
