Simple Blood and Urine Tests Can Help Detect Serious Prostate Cancer and Avoid Unnecessary Biopsies

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. The PSA blood test has helped many men detect cancer early, but it can also lead to unnecessary worry and biopsies when the results are not specific. Many men with slightly high PSA levels do not actually have dangerous cancer.

A new review looked at several modern tests that use blood or urine to better detect serious prostate cancer. These tests can help doctors decide who truly needs further testing, like MRI or biopsy, and who can safely avoid it.

The review examined over 900 studies and focused on newer tests that are already available to doctors. Blood tests like the Prostate Health Index (PHI), 4Kscore, and IsoPSA, and urine tests like SelectMDx, ExoDx IntelliScore (EPI), and MyProstateScore (MPS, MPS2) all showed strong results. These tests detected almost all significant cancers but helped many men avoid unnecessary biopsies.

In some cases, these biomarker tests were also useful for men with unclear MRI results. This helps prevent both overdiagnosis of harmless cancers and the stress of invasive procedures.

For men with elevated PSA levels, these new tests can provide more accurate answers and reduce the need for biopsies that may not be necessary. They are simple, noninvasive, and can make prostate cancer screening safer and more precise.
